Vague Words Are Invisible. Numbers Stop the Scroll.

"Affordable" gets skipped. "Less than a coffee a day" gets read. Why specific, honest numbers beat vague copy, and how to fix yours this week.

Which hook do you think will perform better?

“This costs less than a coffee a day.”

Or…

“It’s affordable.”

It’s the first one, and it isn’t close. Being specific beats being vague every day of the week.

Why “Affordable” Gets Ignored

Think about how many times you’ve seen the word affordable this week. Every brand uses it. Your brain has learned to skip right over it.

Words like great, quality, amazing, and affordable are invisible. They don’t give the reader anything to picture or check. They just blend into the thousand other posts fighting for attention.

Now look at “less than a coffee a day.” You can see it. You can do the math in your head. It gives you a way to judge the price instead of just asking you to trust the word.

Numbers make people stop. They feel concrete and real, and they tell the reader you’re not hiding behind fluffy language.

Same Idea, Two Versions

Here’s how this plays out in real copy:

  • Vague: “Great skin care for glowing skin.”

  • Specific: “A simple routine that clears breakouts in 14 days.”

  • Vague: “Fast delivery.”

  • Specific: “At your door in 48 hours.”

  • Vague: “Save time on your reports.”

  • Specific: “Cut your weekly reporting from 3 hours to 20 minutes.”

The first line in each pair gets lost. The second gets read. Same product, same offer, just a sharper way of saying it.

One Rule: Your Numbers Must Be True

This part matters. A number only works when it’s honest.

If you say “clears acne in 14 days,” you need real results to back it up. Made-up stats are just fake countdown timers in a different outfit. Readers can smell them, and once they catch you stretching the truth, they stop trusting the rest of your page.

So use numbers you can prove. Customer results, real timelines, real prices, real counts. If you don’t have a number yet, go and get one. Ask your customers, check your data, or run a small test.

Your Challenge This Week

Open your ad copy, landing pages, and captions, and go hunting for vagueness. Here’s how:

1. Highlight every vague word. Look for affordable, fast, easy, best, quality, and great. Each one is a spot where a number could go.

2. Ask “how much, how fast, how many?” For every highlighted word, answer those questions. How fast is fast? How easy is easy? Put the answer in the copy.

3. Turn features into outcomes with a number. Instead of “powerful tool,” try “saves our clients 5 hours a week.”

4. Use comparisons when you don’t have a stat. “Less than a coffee a day” works because it puts a price next to something familiar.

5. Test the old line against the new one. Run both as ads and let the results tell you which one wins.

The Bottom Line

Chances are your marketing is full of vague words, and each one may be quietly wasting your ad spend. People don’t scroll slowly through ads. You get a split second, and a clear number is one of the best ways to earn it.

So go through your copy today. Find the fuzzy spots and replace them with something specific and true.

Where in your marketing are you being too vague right now?
