Would You Say This to Someone You Love?

Ogilvy's oldest advice still applies: respect your customer, drop the cheap tricks, and run every ad through the "someone I love" test.

David Ogilvy, one of the most famous names in advertising, once said, “The consumer isn’t a moron, she’s your wife.”

I think about that line a lot. I take two lessons from it, and both can change how you market.

Lesson one: don’t talk down to your audience.

It’s easy to slip into a tone that treats people like targets instead of humans. Big promises, loud claims, and pressure at every turn. But the person reading your ad is smart. They have a life, a budget, and a gut feeling that tells them when something is off.

Speak to them the way you’d speak to someone you care about. Be clear. Be honest. Give them the facts and let them decide.

Lesson two: don’t disrespect your customers with cheap tricks.

Ogilvy said this long before the internet, but it fits online marketing even better today.

Think about the countdown timer on a checkout page. “Only 1 hour left to get this deal!” You come back the next day and the timer is still there, ticking away like nothing happened.

That isn’t clever. It’s a small insult. It tells your visitor that you think they won’t notice, and they do notice. Once they catch you in one fake detail, they start doubting everything else on your page.

The “Someone I Love” Test

Here’s a simple check you can run on any piece of marketing before it goes live. Ask yourself:

Would I say this, or show this, to my child, my partner, or my parent?

If the answer is no, that’s your sign to change it.

Picture your mom about to buy something from your website. Would you flash a fake timer at her? Would you hide the real price until the last step? Would you write a headline that promises something you can’t deliver?

Of course not. You’d tell her what the product does, who it’s for, and who it’s not for. You’d answer her questions straight.

How to Put This Into Practice

Here are a few ways to apply the test this week.

1. Audit your landing page. Read it top to bottom and look for anything that feels pushy or false. Fake scarcity, vague claims, and hidden costs all count. Cut them.

2. Use deadlines only when they’re real. If you run a sale that truly ends on Friday, say so. A real deadline builds trust. A fake one burns it.

3. Say what your product can’t do. This feels scary, but it works. When you’re honest about the limits, people believe you more about the strengths.

4. Read your ad copy out loud. If it sounds strange coming out of your mouth in a normal conversation, it will sound strange to your customer too. Rewrite it in plain words.

5. Show real people. Polished, stiff ads often feel like they’re talking at someone. Content that looks and sounds like a real person talking to a friend feels more respectful, and it tends to land better too.

That last point is a big reason I’m excited about creator-led video. If you want to see how real, human content can work for your own ads, take a look at ReelAds. It’s a good place to start if you’d rather build trust than chase clicks.

The Bottom Line

Marketing works best when it starts with respect. Your customer isn’t a number on a dashboard. She’s someone’s wife, someone’s daughter, someone’s friend. Treat her that way.

The next time you’re about to publish an ad or launch a page, stop and ask the question one more time:

Would I do this to someone I love?

If yes, hit publish. If not, go back and fix it.
